Sunday is the one day most of us get to slow down. But it can also be the day you make someone else’s week better. You do not need a lot of money or a big plan. A few hours and a little effort are enough. Here are some simple things you can do on a Sunday in Delhi.
1. Join a food drive
Serving a hot meal to children who do not get one every day is one of the most direct ways to help. Many volunteer groups in Delhi run Sunday drives in bastis and near night shelters. You can help cook, pack, serve or simply sit with the children while they eat.
2. Teach a child for an hour
Many children in slums go to school but have no one at home to help them study. Spend an hour teaching basic English, maths or drawing. Carry a few notebooks and pencils, because a new pencil means a lot to a child who has to share one.
3. Feed stray animals
Carry some chapati, plain rice or dog biscuits and feed the dogs in your lane. You can also give a cow some green fodder or fruit peels. Keep a bowl of clean water outside your home, especially in summer.
4. Clear out your cupboard
Go through your wardrobe and pick out clothes, shoes and slippers you no longer use. Wash them, pack them neatly and give them to a group that distributes them, or hand them out yourself to people who need them.
5. Spend time at an old age home
Many elderly people in old age homes rarely get visitors. Sit with them, listen to their stories, play a game of cards or carrom. It costs nothing, and it often means more to them than any gift.
6. Celebrate your special day differently
Have a birthday or anniversary coming up? Instead of a party, celebrate it with children in a basti. Cut a cake together, share a meal and give them small gifts. Many people tell us it becomes their most memorable birthday.
7. Bring a friend along
Doing good is easier when you do it together. Ask a friend, your family or your colleagues to join you. Children especially enjoy it, and it teaches them early on what giving feels like.
Start this Sunday
At Feeding Universe, we go out every Sunday because that is the one day all our volunteers are free. This Sunday, 11 October, we are holding a Children’s Day drive with food and stationery for children. You are welcome to join us, even if it is your first time.
